We were called in to remove a number of cast iron penstocks from a basement of a Water Treatment Works in Norwich.

This task was awarded to PMP because the site had very restricted access and the penstocks were located in a confined space. Additional problems were caused by the size and weight of the penstocks to be removed, and by the fact that conventional cranage could not be used without removing the roof of the building.

Following a visit to the site to carry out a full site survey, we produced a risk assessment and method statement and proposed a solution to the problem.

Our solution was to design, build and test a lifting davit which could be used in the restricted space available. After assembly of the davit on site, the penstocks were cut into sections which would be small enough to lift out of the access shaft and were removed from the building using a specially designed trolley.

The work was completed in approx. 5 days
